Dr. Reza Nabavi faced professional pushback after two prominent arrests in 2002:
- First Arrest: In early 2002, Oakland police found Nabavi and a 15-year-old girl asleep in a car. A search uncovered methamphetamine, marijuana, a knife, a handgun, and ammunition. He was arrested for possession for sale of a controlled substance and received 36 months of probation after pleading no contest.
- Second Arrest: Less than four weeks after his first conviction, police arrested Nabavi again for agreeing to sell methamphetamine to a confidential informant. He pleaded no contest and received a concurrent probation term.
Because of these convictions, the California Board of Psychology denied his license applications in 2004 and 2005. While Nabavi eventually completed a five-year probationary term involving random drug testing to secure an active license in 2008, his history has come under heavy scrutiny following the suspected overdose death of 27-year-old Presley Gerber—the son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber—at the facility on September 20, 2026
